Bebionic Hand Occupational Therapy Training
Comfortable, intuitive and precise, the bebionic prosthetic hand continues to transform the lives and abilities of people with upper extremity amputation around the world. This course will train occupational therapists to work with bebionic users based on a 3-tiered rehabilitation program, including controls training, repetitive drills, and ADL training. All features and functions of the bebionic hand will be discussed, including the 14 available grip patterns and hand positions, hand operation, multi-articulating fingers, and proportional control. These functions will also be demonstrated with a live user when available. An overview of myoelectric principles, pre-prosthetic training, patient evaluation, care and maintenance, and outcome measures will also be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
- To gain a basic understanding of EMG electrode theory.
- To identify bebionic features, functions, and 14 available grips and hand positions.
- To recognize strategies to redevelop the use of multi-articulating fingers.
- To demonstrate an understanding of the 3-tiered rehabilitation program.
- To demonstrate competence in integrating the 3-tiers into current practice.

Presenters:
Erica Swanson CP, MOT, OTR/L and Annie Hess, CP
Erica has been working in the field since 2007, and joined Ottobock in 2011. In her current role as a PCS Clinical Specialist, Erica travels around the U.S. fitting MP Knees and teaching courses. Erica enjoys the fact that her position lets her both teach and participate in patient care, and she loves educating patients and practitioners on current trends in prosthetic technology.
Annie has had a passion for upper limb prosthetics since her first class in O&P school, and has pursued additional experience and knowledge in this area since. She attended the prosthetics and orthotics program at the University of Washington, and has worked with and for several upper limb specialists. Annie is the secretary of the AAOP’s Upper Limb Prosthetic society and the first woman to serve as an officer. She authored the chapter on body-powered UL components for the 4th edition of the Atlas of Amputations and Limb Deficiencies.
